PhagoMed is looking for a HIGH-CALIBRE MOLECULAR BIOLOGY SCIENTIST TO JOIN OUR TEAM as Group Leader Lysins (f/m/d) in Vienna, Austria

Do you want to be part of pioneering a first-in-class antibiotics alternative and lead the research into breakthrough lysin applications in areas of high medical need – together with a highly talented team and a network of leading physicians?

Then apply for the position of

Bacteriophage endolysins have properties which put them in the first row of potential alternatives to antibiotics. Endolysins have highly desirable pharmaceutical properties: they act specifically on individual species of bacteria, leaving the beneficial part of the microbiome intact, they have proven effectiveness against biofilms, have no known side effects, and resistances rates are negligible. For many bacterial infections, endolysins are a promising alternative to antibiotics, but to this date no lysin-based pharmaceuticals are on the market in either the US or the EU. We have developed proprietary recombinant endolysins which specifically lyse only bacteria causing bacterial vaginosis, one of the most frequent reasons for women to seek medical advice and get antibiotics prescribed. PhagoMed develops pharmaceuticals based on these and other endolysins, which have the potential to revolutionize the standard of care in chronic bacterial infections.

Who is PhagoMed

PhagoMed Biopharma GmbH is an Austrian biotech company focused on the development of human therapeutic applications of phages and phage-derived proteins. Currently, PhagoMed has three active development programs in the fields of periprosthetic joint infections, urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis. These development programs are based on the experiences of its clinical co-founders with last-resort treatments, as well as research collaborations with highly prestigious scientists and research institutions in Germany and Belgium. Since its incorporation in November 2017, the company has raised more than €5 million in private investments and public grants. PhagoMed has a team of eleven highly skilled scientist working on its programs, six of which at the Campus Vienna Biocenter in Vienna, Austria.

PhagoMed’s Vision

To SOLVE CHRONIC BACTERIAL INFECTIONS by developing specialized phage-based pharmaceuticals that can become FIRST LINE TREATMENT in our target indications.

Mandatory requirements

  • Several years of postdoc-level research experience, as a junior academic group leader or lab/team leader in a biotech company;
  • Scientific track record in molecular biology, structure biology and/or microbiology, working in one of the following fields: human microbiome, biofilms, endolysins or bacteriophages;
  • Excellent publication track record in a relevant field;
  • Track record of leading students and research assistants, including steering and motivating a team, ideally within a biotech company (or as part of a postdoc project)
  • Highly structured thinking;
  • Interest in targeted pharmaceutical development;
  • Interest in working in a team of highly skilled and motivated professionals;

Welcome add-on qualifications

  • Experience with endolysins or bacteriophages
  • Experience in research on antibiotics, e.g. resistance formation
  • Experience with mucosal bacterial biofilms, especially for the vaginal microbiome
  • Experience in bacterial genetics
  • Experience in pharmaceutical research in a start-up/ company

  • Take the full responsibility to advance the pharmaceutical endolysin development program against the milestones of the development plan
  • Coordinate the development workstreams between the lab work in Vienna, the work at our academic and commercial research partners and any relevant external parties (e.g. Regulatory Consultants):
  • Supervise and lead scientists and research assistants in the lab in Vienna, including training on working with bacteria and lysins, working in a BSL-2 environment, application of experimental and documentation standards;
  • Establish research processes according to the latest microbiological technology developments (e.g. robotics and genomic data);
  • Further develop and validate potency models for endolysins against bacteria in (mucosal) biofilm and planktonic growth;
  • Assembly of bacterial panels for species of interest, including in silico analysis of geno- and serotypes, to ensure required genetical and geographical breadth;
  • Analyze effect of endolysins on bacteria, including MIC, MBC, Cmax, AUC, resistance formation, in planktonic growth and on mucosal biofilms
  • Evaluate immune response to endolysins
  • Establish standardized experimental protocols that will enable reproducibility in later GLP studies (e.g. potency, phage production and purification, phage evolution);
  • Documentation of results according to the PhagoMed Quality Standards (non-GLP but closely resembling GLP), to ensure the quality of results and their documentation are acceptable to regulatory authorities, working towards a human clinical trial application;
  • Drafting of patent claims as appropriate, publication of selected results in scientific journals;
  • Report directly to the Co-CEO for Research and Development of the company and become part of the PhagoMed Management Team
